Du Quoin Main Street was accepted in the Illinois Main Street program on November 9, 2005. The main street program’s purpose is to revitalize the downtown district with established businesses.
Du Quoin is unique with the historic buildings still in tact. The Grand Theater has been renovated and has three shows available to the people. The IOOF Odds Fellow building has been renovated and is now a teen club with new concept of using the building for adult dancing and parties. We have a dress shop, children’s consignment shop, t-shirt shop, antique stores, fine gift shop, purse shop, many professional buildings, salons, hardware store, restaurants, photography, banks, scrap book shop, cycle shop, body shop, title and license store, frame shop, barber shop, dollar general, furniture store, lawn mower store, physical fitness centers, medicine shoppe, our city park and city hall, police and fire department, public library, pool and spas, post office, bakery with this list we have a lot to offer to shoppers.
Du Quoin Main Street, Inc. is in its 3rd year. Du Quoin has grown and we are making things happen in our community. We are one of 70 communities in the state of Illinois to be an Illinois Main Street City. Eleven (11) new businesses have opened in three years and we will have four (4) more to open in the coming months.
Du Quoin Main Street has a board of directors with 11 members and we have four working committees for design, organization, promotion, and economic development. We have several new fund raisers coming up in the next month. On Sunday afternoon, March 30th we will hold the first annual DQMSTreeter’s Ball adult dance in our new teen club. We will sponsor a Texas Hold’em tournament on April 6th. The 2nd Annual Du Quoin Heritage Days will be in our city park on April 25th & 26th with a carnival and activities of stagecoach rides, 3 on 3 basketball tournament, a ‘Not So Beautiful Contest,” horse shoe and washer contest, car show, craft vendors, food vendors and a beer/wine tent with nightly entertainment. Also, there will be an authentic Indian teepee with a stone cutter showing the days of yesteryear. There is something for all family members.
We did a partnership drive and partners came forth to wanting to support the program and help Du Quoin grow. The new TIF program was voted on at a hearing in city hall and we will be finalizing that project soon. Du Quoin Main Street was glad to have this project pass and we know good changes will develop in the near future for the downtown.
Come and visit our busy and growing community. We have friendly people to welcome you to our community. We want our neighbors to visit and walk our streets with enjoyment and shop in their favorite stores. Du Quoin is putting pride back into its community.
