You may have heard the phrase, “it takes a community to raise a child”, but what does it take to make a community? From the word community comes the Latin derivative “communis” meaning “common, public, shared by many.” If you break the word communis down a little further “com” (together) and “munis” (performing services) you get a general idea that a community involves many entities and individuals working together.
In order to maintain a sustainable community the infrastructure must be in place. USDA, Rural Development is one piece of the puzzle that helps rural communities and rural residents finance infrastructure improvements in a variety of ways. Current projects include funding emergency services for new fire and ambulance stations, cardiac monitors, hospital expansions, renovation of community centers, library renovation, child care centers, potable water and waste facilities and more.
In another sense, it takes a community of individuals and entities to bring all the pieces of the puzzle together to build a sustainable community. Building partnerships for community, economic growth and development means cooperating, brainstorming, and pooling our resources whether it’s through technical, financial or outreach methods to ensure we can provide the greatest economic impact on rural southern Illinois. Together we are building a future for our children in hopes that they too, benefit not only from a better quality of life, but also will be inspired to keep their roots planted in southern Illinois.
